![]() ![]() Even more impressive is when it's on the hunt it can dive towards prey at speeds over 200 mph making. This study investigates the aerodynamic and gravitational forces on ideal falcons and uses a mathematical model to calculate speed and acceleration during diving. In normal flight, it can reach an average speed of 40 mph and when in the chase, it can fly as fast as 65 mph. Estimates of their top speed in a dive range up to 157 m s-1, although speeds this high have never been accurately measured. It controls its dive, captures the prey and lands in its own right. ![]() The peregrine falcon is breathtakingly fast. Peregrine Falcon soars to a great high, and dives at speeds of up to 320 to 380 km/hour. Launched at full speed the falcon can now throw its prey to the ground or stab it with the help of its 8 sharp talons. A mustache-like marking and a sharply hooked beak distinguish this elegant bird of prey. Its eyes allow it to see 2 times further than the human eye and to situate itself in space, even at high speeds. To catch its prey, it must also be agile and on the lookout. But this exceptional speed isn't enough to hunt. They’re possible thanks to its unique anatomy, even among birds of prey: wings that are more compact and pointed less pronounced ridges above its eyes to enhance aerodynamics and stiffer feathers to cut through the air and change direction.ĭuring peak speeds, the air pressure could suffocate it but its nostrils have small bones called “tubercles” to slow down the air and decrease the pressure that could enter its lungs. These peak speeds are reached when the falcon dives for prey. In 2005, one was recorded at 389.46 km/h, which is 16.86 km/h faster than the Formula 1 world record. ![]() Taking all environments into account, it’s the peregrine falcon that holds the speed record. No, cheetahs aren’t the fastest animals on Earth ![]()
